xبَلَغَ اسم هارون الرشيد، من المكانة في تاريخ العالَمين العربي والإسلامي، أنه اكتسب شهرة أسطورية تخطّت هذين العالمين إلى أمم كثيرة تُرجمت أخباره إلى لغاتها، وصارت أخباره فيها كحكايات «ألف ليلة وليلة».وأسباب هذه الشهرة كثيرة أبرزها: بلوغ الحضارة الإسلامية في عصره مرتبةً ازدهر فيها العلم والشعر والأدب والفن؛ وخطورةُ الأحداث التي جرت في عهده؛ والثراء الفاحش الذي حققته الدولة؛ وما رُوي، حول بلاطه وقصور وزرائه وحاشيته، من أخبار الترف والبذخ والتأنق. غير أن عواملَ ونَزَعات، أبرزها الشعوبية، قد عبثت بسيرة هذا الخليفة، وشَوّهت حقيقته، وجعلته حكاية حافلة بنوادر المجون والخلاعة، وحاولت، على الأخص، أن تطمس نزعته العربية، وصموده في وجه الشعوبية وتَصدّيه لها وانقضاضَه عليها. هذا التجنّي على التاريخ العربي، من خلال تشويه سيرة هارون الرشيد، هو الذي دفع المؤلف إلى وضع كتابه عنه، ورَسْمِ صورةٍ صحيحة له، ودَحْضِ ما حِيكَ حوله من افتراءات أبرز ما انطلقت منه كان النزعة الشعوبية التي استهدفت القومية العربية، وما تزال. ويلاحظ قارىءُ الكتاب أن المؤلف كان معتدلاً لم يَنْزِع إلى التطَرّف، مُنْطلَقُه العام: أن تاريخ العرب لا يزال محتاجاً إلى دراسات تُخَلّصه من عَبَثِ العابثين، وأن كتابه محاولةٌ تندرج في هذا الإطار، وتتطلع إلى هذه الغاية
