Governed by fear and powerlessness, Amal Bounemr lives a conservative rural life in her Druze village in Mount Lebanon, where many of life's questions escape into religiosity and isolation. Her father, a sheikh by profession and a blacksmith, wields the hammer of his power over the family, shaping the future of his four daughters to fit within his limited world. Amal's parents' religious commitment stands in the way of Amal's enrollment at the American University of Beirut. In this context, Amal makes her grand bargain for emancipation by marrying Salem, a wealthy member of the Druze community. Will Salem fulfill his promise? Or will Amal wage a new war to achieve her dream? This novel attempts to delve into contemporary Druze society and deconstruct it socially, religiously, and mythologically.
