Departure
The events take place in the Kingdom of Granada after the fall of all Islamic kingdoms in Al-Andalus. The trilogy begins in 1491, the year Granada fell with the announcement of the treaty by which Abu Abdullah Muhammad XII, the last king of Granada, ceded his kingdom to the monarchs of Castile and Aragon. It concludes with the last surviving protagonist, Ali, defying the order to expel Muslims when he discovers that death lies in departing Al-Andalus, not in staying.
