Tambaya is involved in a car accident, forcing her to find a new home and a job to support herself. Various paths take her to her brother and his wife in Ghana, leading her to experience another stressful chapter in her life. She then returns to Nigeria to work in an orphanage, hoping to achieve stability and find happiness again. Through the orphanage's children, the humanitarian cases they go through, and the families who apply to adopt one of them over the other, she learns about Nigerian society with its diverse religious and cultural backgrounds, and how politics in Nigeria impacts every aspect of life, even inside the orphanage. "A Flourish of Scorpions" is inspired by the author's personal experience after volunteering at an orphanage in Abuja, and her desire to write about them.
