"قطع أدبية باذخة التأثير لم تخدشها القواميس، ولم ينل منها الزمان".في يوليو، 1846، التقى فلوبير الذي لا يتجاوز ربيعه الخامس والعشرين، بالشاعرة الشهيرة "لويز كوليه"، داخل ورشة صديق مشترك. ومذ ذاك، رمى كيوبيد سهام الحب في قلب فلوبير الذي اختار لويز، التي تكبره بأحد عشر عاماً، حبيبة وملهمة، حتى قال فيها: "لم يحب ولن يحب أبداً امرأة مثلما أحبها"..كان عام 1846 قاس على فلوبير، إذ فقد فيه والده وشقيقته، وأحس بالضياع وانعدام شغفه بالحياة والكتابة، غير أن وقوعه في حب لويز، الفاتنة والمتوجة بجوائز الأكاديمية الفرنسية، جعله يسترجع حيويته ويفكر في أحلامه المؤجلة.في هذه الرسائل أحادية الصوت، نتعرف على وجه آخر للروائي الخالد، نقترب أكثر من جانبه الإنساني، من عفويته، مخاوفه، أحلامه، آرائه الأدبية والحياتية، ذوقه القرائي، وكذا حساسيته الروحية، تأثره السريع، معاناته مع المرض، وشعوره الدائم بالاغتراب والملل، كما نكتشفه عاشقاً، وكاتباً مبتدئاً لا يحلم بالمجد والشهرة، أو باعتراف النقاد والكتاب الكبار، بقدر ما يحلم بإنجاز تحف أدبية على درجة كبيرة من الكمال، لذا نجده يقرأ كثيرا ويكتب قليلا، ويمضي وقته في إعادة كتابة وتنقيح مسوداته، كونه يقدس للغاية مهنته ومهمته ككاتب، ويؤمن بضرورة التناغم المثالي بين الأفكار والأسلوب..ثمة اعتقاد بأنّ فلوبير هو أعظم مبدع كَتب الرسائل، بل أن عذوبة رسائله تضاهي جمالية رواياته، وفي هذه الرسائل، نكتشف بدايات الحب الأكثر تأثيراً في حياته، والتي يشاع أنها ألهمته بناء شخصيته الروائية الشهيرة "إيما بوفاري".
