The novel features a series of romantic relationships between the protagonist (Samir) and two women in Paris. The first is Hadeel, a French woman of Palestinian descent who runs a gallery in the city. The second is Louise, the French painter, whose paintings are later displayed in Hadeel’s gallery. In spite the fact that they know each other, both women are oblivious of the relationship each has with Samir, the Palestinian refugee in France, until later in the story. The novel raises several questions about diaspora, and the impact of identity on personal relationships, where the obsession with Palestinian origin remains present, and even portrayed in the protagonist’s character who is disencumbered from the stereotypical identity of a refugee, for that Samir is dragging with him to modern Paris the story of his grandfather who left Tarshiha in 1948.
