ينبعث الماضي في حياة آدم، كأنما ليزعزع رتابتها: وظيفةٌ لا تُحتمل، حياةٌ عائليّة مُعدمة، صديقٌ وحيد يُدعى رواد، ووقتٌ يقضيه في مقهى ماما سامية. أثناء إحدى جلساته في المقهى، يصله الماضي عن طريق رجل مجهول يُدعى إدغار. ولو أنه لم يسبق له أن رآه من قبل، إلا أن الرجل الغريب يدعوه إلى شقّته. يكشف له أسراراً ما تزال تقاوم التحلُّل رغم مرور عقود. يفتح له صندوق باندورا، فيخرج منه ما ليس متوقّعاً. بعد سنوات من موتها تحضر أمّه مجدّداً مؤكّدة أن الموتى لا يغيبون تماماً. بل هم قادرون على اختراق الحياة مجدّداً، وتبديل مصائر الأحياء... في هذه الحبكة المحكمة واللامتوقّعة، ترصد الرواية أيضاً تأثيرات الحروب من دون أن تذكرها مباشرة، تقتفي أثرها وندوبها الذاتية التي تزداد ترسّخاً كلّما تقدّمت ذكراها في العمر. The past spills into Adam’s life as if to shake its humdrum: an unbearable job, a destitute family life, an only friend named Rawad, and time spent at Mama Samia’s Café. One day, while at the café, the past comes back to haunt him in the form an unknown man named Edgar. Although he’s never seen this man before, the stranger invites him to his apartment. He then reveals to him secrets that are still hard to decipher despite being decades old. He opens Pandora’s box for him only for something unexpected to come out. Years after her death, his mother shows up again, proving that the dead never truly disappear. But rather, they are capable of breaking through life’s barriers again and changing the fate of the living… In this accurate and unexpected plot, the effects of war are perceived without ever being directly mentioned. The story depicts the war’s impact and the scars it left behind which get deeper as its memory grows older.
