This beautiful and inspiring story of hope and courage, based on interviews with Holocaust survivor Ludwig (Lalle) Sokolov, the tattoo artist at Auschwitz-Birkenau, is an unforgettable love story amidst horror. In April 1942, Lalle Sokolov, a Slovak Jew, was forcibly transported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. When his captors discovered he spoke several languages, he was employed as a “tattooer” (German for “tattooer”), tasked with inscribing permanent marks on the bodies of his fellow prisoners. Imprisoned for more than two and a half years, Lalle witnessed horrific atrocities and brutality, but also incredible acts of courage and compassion. One day in July 1942, Lale, prisoner number 32407, comforts a trembling young woman waiting in line to have the number 34902 tattooed on her arm. Her name is Gita, and in that first meeting, Lale vows to survive the camp and marry her.
