xImam al-Nawawi compiled his collection of forty-two hadiths, with the minimum of fiqh and commentary necessary to ensure their meaning is not ambiguous. Ibn Uyaynah said: "Hadiths are misleading except for those who have acquired fiqh." Ibn Wahb said: "Every hadith master who has no imam in fiqh is misguided." Of this vast collection of forty hadiths, Imam al-Nawawi's book is undoubtedly the most famous and enduring. This is, to our knowledge, the first complete translation of this work into English, which is why we have titled it "The Complete Forty Hadiths of Imam al-Nawawi."
