The reason I wrote this book was the extreme boredom that had plagued me for a considerable period. However, what really brought home to me the importance of this subject was the death of a dear friend due to a bout of boredom. I had even agreed with Arthur Rimbaud when he said, “Boredom is no longer my love.” Boredom was no longer an innocent condition or a minor obstacle. Suddenly, Rimbaud’s complaint of “mortal boredom” became a serious matter, and the expression was later popularized in pop and rock songs such as J.G. Allen’s “Bored to Death” and Depeche Mode’s “Something to Do,” which represented our entire lives. I later realized that this experience was not limited to my close group of friends; it pointed to a serious problem with the concept of “meaning” in our contemporary culture as a whole. Exploring the problem of boredom is an attempt to understand our human nature and how we interact with the world around us in our time. The more I thought about this issue, the more it seemed to me that boredom is a fundamental and influential factor in understanding our contemporary culture.
