

Kafka on the Shore (海辺のカフカ, Umibe no Kafuka) is a 2002 novel by Japanese author Haruki Murakami. Named one of The New York Times' "10 Best Books of 2005," it won the 2006 World Fiction Award. The novel tells the stories of Kafka Tamura, a bookish 15-year-old who escapes the Oedipal Curse, and Satoru Nakata, a disabled old man with the supernatural ability to converse with cats. The book explores themes of music as a means of communication, metaphysics, dreams, fate, and the unconscious. After the book's release, Murakami allowed questions about the novel, and answered several of them. The novel was generally well-received, receiving positive reviews from John Updike and The New York Times.
