The text of the book of Tawhid and its issues | Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab
The Book of Tawhid by Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab clarifies the individual aspects of Tawhid (Islamic monotheism). It is based on a verse from the Quran, a hadith (saying of the Prophet), and sometimes a single statement from the early generations of Muslims. Sheikh Salih Al ash-Sheikh said: “The author initially wrote this book in Basra when he traveled there. His motivation for writing it was what he saw of the prevalence of shirk (polytheism) and the loss of the true understanding of Tawhid among some Muslims, as well as the manifestations of major, minor, and hidden shirk he observed among them. So, in Basra, he began compiling this book and clarifying the proofs for its issues.” This was mentioned by his student and grandson, Sheikh Abd ar-Rahman ibn Hasan, in “Al-Maqamat.” Then, when the author returned to Najd, he revised and completed the book.
This book focuses on the Oneness of Worship, which is the Oneness of God's Divinity, and warns against major and minor forms of polytheism. It also discusses the Oneness of God's Names and Attributes, presents evidence from the Quran and Sunnah on the dangers of polytheism, and explains the message of monotheism that God sent His Messengers with. The author begins by explaining the Oneness of Worship because most people in his time were ignorant of this concept and had fallen into many actions and statements that contradicted it. He concludes with the Oneness of God's Names and Attributes, thus making the book comprehensive of the three types of monotheism. Sheikh Ismail bin Saad bin Atiq said: “This is a new approach to explaining the objectives of monotheism, as it is structured in concentric circles, each circle expanding upon the previous one. The first circle is understanding the monotheism with which God sent His prophets and messengers. The second circle is realizing that monotheism. The third circle is fearing all forms of polytheism. The fourth circle is protecting monotheism. And the fifth circle is safeguarding the sanctity of monotheism.”
