The Text of the Book of Monotheism and its Issues | Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab
The Book of Tawhid by Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, in which the author explains the individuals of Tawhid. It is based on a verse, a hadith, and sometimes a single statement from the salaf. Sheikh Saleh Al ash-Sheikh said: “This book was initially written by the author in Basra when he traveled there. The motivation for writing it was the prevalence of polytheism and the loss of the true concept of Tawhid among some Muslims. He also saw among them manifestations of major, minor, and hidden polytheism. So, he began compiling this book in Basra and clarifying the evidence for its issues. His student and grandson Sheikh Abd al-Rahman ibn Hasan mentioned this in “Al-Maqamat.” Then, when the author came to Najd, he edited and completed the book.
This book focuses on the unity of worship, which is the unity of divinity, and warns against major and minor polytheism. It also discusses the unity of names and attributes, explains the evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah on the danger of polytheism, and explains the monotheism with which Allah sent His messengers. The author began this book by explaining the unity of worship, because most people in his time were ignorant of this monotheism and fell into many actions and sayings that contradicted it. He then concluded his book with the unity of names and attributes, so that this book would be comprehensive of the three types of monotheism. Sheikh Ismail bin Saad bin Atiq said: “A new style in explaining to people the objectives of monotheism, as he divided it into circular sections, each one wider than the other. The first circle is knowledge of the monotheism with which Allah sent His prophets and messengers. The second circle is the realization of that monotheism. The third circle is the fear of polytheism in all its forms. The fourth circle is the protection of monotheism. The fifth circle is the protection of monotheism.”
