It's 1929; Stalin comes to power in Russia, Mussolini calls on Italians to restore the glories of the Roman emperors, and the Nazi Party fuels Hitler's cauldron to quickly leapfrog Germany. While Europe opted for fascism, Thomas Mann chose for himself paths characterized by respect for others and a tendency toward democratic values. This ultimately led to his persecution by the German Nazi Party, which led to his escape to Switzerland in 1933 and to the United States after the outbreak of World War II in 1939. Mario and the Magician is an example of these avant-garde ideas that Thomas Mann embraced, in addition to his contact with the visions of Goethe, Nietzsche, and Schopenhauer. This later shaped the image of what became known as the literature of German exiles who opposed totalitarian values, such as Theodor Adorno, Hannah Arendt, and others. The story has been adapted into an opera several times, starting in 1989, and was also presented in a German film in 1994 at the 19th Moscow International Film Festival.
