"These are my memoirs; I carried them throughout my life, considering them my most precious possessions, so that one day I might find myself in them and recall my past, just as a traveler in the desert carries a water skin to ward off death by thirst. But the journey was long and the skin punctured, so with every step I took, a drop leaked from it, until its water was nearly depleted, the burden grew heavy, and my arm grew weary. Then came someone to mend its tear, lighten its load, and preserve what remained of its water for me; his name was Zuhair Al-Ayoubi. He came asking me to record my memoirs... Publishing these memoirs was one of my great aspirations in life, and I often resolved to do so but then became preoccupied. I even announced my intention to commit myself to it, so I wouldn't escape, but I still didn't write them, in fact, I didn't even start; because I only write for print. Therefore, I had nothing written to refer to and rely on when recording these memoirs, and what I entrusted to memory, memory was too weak to retain and unable to recall. So I delayed and procrastinated, trying to escape without giving a reason, but he surrounded me, blocked my escape routes, and with his politeness, kindness, and good approach, restrained my tongue from explicitly refusing. Then we agreed that I would narrate them to one of our literary brothers, and he would write them in his own hand. So he listened to me and transcribed from me, writing two episodes beautifully and elegantly, but nothing scratches your itch like your own fingernail; and it was due to his kindness to me that some of my energy returned, and I began to write."
