Majed Abdel Hadi divides the texts of this book into seven chapters, including monstrosities, tales, evenings, leadership, illumination, ignorance, and betrayals, in a clever effort that urges the reader to a kind of biased complicity towards what the connotations behind each chapter lead to, and also to what they prohibit in more than one way, because the meaning of the monster may keep pace with or even compete with the meaning of ignorance between snakes, rodents, and insects necessary to achieve ecological balance, and others that are only released to prey, bite, and impose the law of the jungle. It is not at all hidden that Abdel Hadi’s analogies refer, without camouflage or obfuscation, to politicians and tyrannical rulers with their names and disasters, within unambiguous political, economic, social, cultural, and moral representations. Because these are texts that draw on a wide, spacious, and open pluralism, Abdel Hadi does not hesitate to harness the high language and employ the complex form. Therefore, the experienced reader will not find it difficult to find, within these texts, various formulations of literary genres. There is the journalistic reportage, the literary memoir, the philosophical contemplation, and the intellectual debate. The tendency towards narration and the approach to the short story are not absent either. Rather, it is correct to extract more than one level of poetic expression and resort to the prose poem. “Blood draws blood,” Abdel Hadi reminds us, leaving his captivating texts, saturated with truth, justice, freedom, progress, and beauty, to draw on our biases as well and to stimulate them.
