Rabi' Qurtuba (Spring of Cordoba) is a historical novel by Hassan Aourid, published in 2017 by the Arab Cultural Center. It is considered one of his most prominent works, revisiting the Golden Age of Al-Andalus through a literary and intellectual lens.
The novel revolves around the character of Caliph Al-Hakam II, the second Caliph of the Umayyad dynasty in Al-Andalus, and is presented through the testimony of a fictional character named "Ziri," the Caliph's scribe, who is tasked with documenting his final wishes on his deathbed. However, this testimony is not merely a historical narrative, but rather a window into the depths of power, the vicissitudes of governance, and the ruler's anxieties, in an era where religious coexistence, scientific prosperity, and cultural revival were at their peak.
The novel blends fiction and history, shedding light on Cordoba as a capital of science and thought, on the Al-Zahra Palace as a symbol of extravagance and power, and on the hidden conflicts that were waged in the corridors of the court. The language is elegant, rich in eloquence, and demonstrates Aourid's mastery in evoking the spirit of the era, without falling into the trap of dry documentation. Rabi' Qurtuba is not just about the past, but about contemporary Arab anxieties, and about the question of revival, identity, and power, reflected in the mirror of history.
