The title of the book describes Pessoa's state in his life, "lack of reassurance" about everything. He declares that writing means self-contempt for him, yet he cannot give it up. It is like a drug that disgusts him, yet he takes it nonetheless. He declares once again that writing means losing the self, and since everything is certain loss, he loses himself without joy. In another place, the reader encounters a strange and surprising situation regarding writing, as he says that it has become joyless for him, and for him the act of giving expression to emotions and perfecting phrases has become a common thing that he practices without enthusiasm or brilliance. As for his answer to the question "Why does he write?" He says: “Because I am the one who calls for concession and withdrawal, I have not yet learned to practice this concession in the most perfect way. I have not learned to abandon the tendency towards poetry and prose, so I write as if I were carrying out a punishment, and the greatest punishment is my knowledge that what I write is false, failed, and uncertain.”
