A meeting of my reflections and memories, a meeting of my old themes (existentialism and aesthetics) and my old loves (Rabelais, Ignacek, Fellini, Malaberté...)..." With these words, Milan Kundera begins his book "Encounter," in which he talks about his memories and about the writers whose creativity he considers himself to belong to and for whom he expresses special admiration. Thus, "Encounter" is an open door to an "imaginary corridor"; a library, divided into nine chapters that mostly branch off from one another. In the first chapter, Milan Kundera explains the following: "When an artist speaks about another artist, he speaks (indirectly and obliquely) about himself, and hence all the benefit of his judgment." In this book, Milan Kundera traces the influence of great intellectuals, reflects on the works of others, and reveals the secrets of his own literature when he reveals aspects of his autobiography. Thus, when he is analyzing a writer like Dossoyevsky And Céline and Philippe Roth... and painters, musicians, and filmmakers as well, he questions art and explores its relationship to the world, to laughter, to death, to forgetting, and to memory. Based on his choices and insights, Milan Kundera writes a history of the novel and art, just as he simultaneously writes a history of his own novels, when he recalls, for example, the way in which he created The Book of Laughter and Forgetting in 1977, based on an essay he wrote about Bacon.
