Grandpa Gardner (the author) goes out with his granddaughter Brooke to buy a harmonica. Gardner recalls his granddaughter meeting President Barack Obama and sitting in the presidential chair in the White House, dreaming of returning to be president herself one day. The adventure begins in a taxi, squeezing its way through the snow to a musical instrument store in a slum. Brooke begins asking her grandfather questions, and the answers are stories he recalls from his past, his rise from rags to riches, and his fight for the rights of people of color. He also shares his views on current issues such as climate change, domestic violence, and the power of the individual.
