Geographical discovery was concerned with the gradual advancement in knowledge of the civilizations of the nations surrounding the Mediterranean, in those vast expanses of land extending in all directions. The task of geographical discovery was limited to uncovering new tribes of people; each wanted to know the other, for one of two main reasons: either conquest, trade, or both. More recently, explorers sought to know distant lands, regardless of the people who inhabited them. Discoveries were mostly driven by Christian evangelism and the invitation to convert to Christianity, with most geographers being monks.
