They announced his birth on the mountain

Author's Name: James Baldwin

The fire-baptized temple church in the novel is not only a meeting place for believers, but also an anchor that steadies the minds of its members from the drift and madness to which the world pushes them. It promises them a paradise that will deliver them from a life of poverty and hardship, especially since the events take place during the Great Depression in the Harlem neighborhood, where the black population of New York lived. Baldwin transformed the church into a shop-like display case, through which he displayed his characters, revealing their depths and focusing his eye on incredible details. The events take place on the day of the teenager John's birthday, a Saturday in 1935, when he wakes up in the morning to find his chest suddenly heavy from the sins he has committed. His religious conscience torments him, and he begins to question his religious, sexual, social, and racial identities, the truth of his feelings, and who he is in this life and in the afterlife. The narrative moves through time, past and present, to form a complete picture of John himself through the memories of his aunt, mother, and father. Each of them stands in church to pray, and the narrative opens up from the heart completely. Sins flow before the Lord, confessions and doubts spill out, and the balance of time is disrupted. All of this is done in a religious language that varies according to the characters: it becomes heavier and biblical (the Old Testament) in the father's voice, and lighter and renewed, becoming evangelical (the New Testament) in the boy's voice. Every person has a personality, and Baldwin seeks to reach the person behind the personality, that raw human material. He believes that if you want to know a person and what determines their reactions to their environment and its events, you must know the major events that shaped their life. In this book, Baldwin applied this to such an extent that he said, referring to his prolific literary output: “If I had to write only one book in my life, I would write no other.”
