Toni Morrison, the first Black novelist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1993), edited some of James Baldwin's works posthumously for the Library of American Literature and wrote of the novel: "...your third masterpiece, Jimmy, the one whose roots are hard to fathom, even to accept, is your tenderness; a tenderness so tender I thought it would not endure [in your writing], but it spread further and embraced me. In the height of my anger, you touched me as tenderly as Tish's fetus did in her womb: a tenderness that is ungraspable, like a whisper in the crowd." James Baldwin has succeeded in writing a romantic story similar to blues music, in which threads of sadness and joy weave a single exquisite fabric worn by the characters, bursting with life until their laughter is almost audible, and their sweat leaves spots on the paper. But you don't feel sad for the two tender hearts when life is cruel to them. Rather, you are amazed by the fetus that, while in its mother's womb, dominates its mother, father, grandparents, aunts, and maternal aunts. How can a developing sperm inject such immense courage, sacrifice, and hope—and even hatred, cruelty, and despair—and carve new paths for life in the lives of people who have yet to see it completed? The story is told through the voice of Tish, a nineteen-year-old Black girl living in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. She fell in love with a Black man named Fonny, who was close to her own age, and they agreed to marry, blessed by both families. However, he was framed for rape and sent to prison, while Tish discovered she was pregnant before they could complete the marriage ceremony. At that time, due to Fonny's poverty, Tish's family is forced to finance a search trip to Puerto Rico to find the runaway rapist and confirm: Did Fonny really commit that heinous act? Or was Police Officer Bill, responsible for security on the street where Fonny lives, the one who framed him? It's a journey that reveals shades of social injustice, racism, and the legitimization of oppression, against the powerful force of struggle raised by the hands of love and innocence.
