In 1871, Dostoevsky published the first part of this novel. That period was characterized by divisions and conflicting ideas, with the growth of socialist ideas and movements advocating liberation from church authority. State power appeared weaker, and Russia perceived itself as inferior to Germany and the rest of Europe.
We've lost our way, what shall we do?
The devil drags us hither and thither,
And turns us in all directions.
With these lines from Pushkin, and an excerpt from the Gospel of Luke about demons entering swine, Dostoevsky opens his novel, which he titles "Demons."
The demons are those who contend over Russia, not for it.
When Dostoevsky published these "Notes," he spoke little of his journey. Instead, he used this journey to present his views on Russia's history and situation, and to mock the countries he passed through. He mocked Germany and England, and especially France, where he began by quoting a line from Fontenelle: "The Frenchman is deprived of reason; and if he had reason, he would consider it the greatest misfortune that could befall him." He then made no mention of Italy or Switzerland, neither good nor ill.
"The Meek One" is one of Dostoevsky's most famous works, in which he delves into the human psyche of a man standing before his wife's corpse. He takes us back to the past of the relationship between a man who acted cruelly towards his wife, to the point where his unspoken regret became useless, leading her to commit suicide.
