This book contains, in its introduction, my answers to questions I have often been asked in newspaper, radio, and television interviews, such as: Why did you choose to write about mythology and religion? Or, Why don't we find you expressing a decisive opinion on religious issues? Or, Do your writings support an anti-religious position? I then moved on to answer questions I have often encountered among others regarding religious issues. After each answer, I took the reader's position and proposed potential questions that might be built upon that answer. Thus, the work proceeded, through the letters "s" and "g", until I achieved what I was striving for: formulating a concise vision of the history of religious ideas in their interaction and relationships with each other throughout the course of human culture. This history falls within the stream of what is called the general history of ideas, a new cognitive system in which wisdom, philosophical, and religious ideas are unified. Although religion differs from wisdom and philosophy in its ritual system that aims to establish a link between the sacred and the profane, in its doctrinal aspect it does not differ from philosophy in terms of providing answers to the major human questions. Both systems are organized thinking about the affairs of life and the universe. Therefore, in our study of religious ideas throughout history, we are studying the most important aspect of the general history of ideas, because religious ideas have an influence on humans that is unparalleled by the influence of philosophical ideas.
