The Road to Wigan Pier

Author: George Orwell

In this novel, Orwell reveals the extent of the suffering he endured when he went to the town of Wigan to live in a flat with four workers and the landlords. He descended into the depths of the mines to narrate the reality lived by the workers, full of hardships and dangers in a hellish scene with its heat, darkness, and polluted air. Orwell also describes the danger of explosions and collapses that occur, and he also describes the misery of the working-class homes, where they are not protected from the winter cold or rain. He also discusses the realities of industrial capitalism that seeks to drain the workers' blood, and he sheds light on the socialist movement in Britain and how socialists misused it. He also warns against the danger of fascism and Nazism and calls for a democratic alliance of workers, journalists, and employees to confront this impending destruction.
