Girl

Author: Camille Laurence

After her novels "The One You Think I Am" and "In Those Arms," Camille Laurence invites us, alongside Laurence Barraqué, as she realized from a young age that girls were inferior to boys through language and parental upbringing. This is an explicitly autobiographical novel, charting a girl's journey through what the French language says about girls. And what the French language says about girls is always generally demeaning, as if language were a mirror of the unconscious at the time. Camille Laurence wanted to say that Simone de Beauvoir was in fact wrong in her 1949 book "The Second Sex," where she states, "One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman." Here, Camille Laurence contradicts de Beauvoir by saying, "You were not born indefinitely, a project already exists." The project is to say that it is the French language that imprisons women from birth, even before they know themselves as women. The novel (Girl) is a mobile journey through eras and time periods and through the evolution of perspectives on women from 1959 to 2020, with her daughter as an example. What happened, and what she narrates, is a novel about the curse, about the birth of a woman in the fifties in the cocoon of family and about language's perspective on her.
