Among Anton Chekhov's unpublished papers, a series of notes were found inside an envelope bearing the words: "Themes, ideas, observations, fragments." His wife, Olga Leonardovna Knipper, later revealed his notebook in which he recorded separate entries related to his future works, dreams, and favorite quotations. Chekhov recopied these scattered notes into another notebook, after crossing out what he had included in his published books during his lifetime. He paid special attention to them and generally did not date them like conventional diaries; here, he records notes personal to him, ambiguous to the reader, or sometimes strange names whose owners we will never find and which he might later use for characters in his stories and plays, capturing their initial details. He also includes incomplete dialogues and titles of plays he never wrote (Lemon Peel, The Bat, The Golden Rain).
