Al-Kamil is considered one of the foundations of literary scholarship and one of its pillars. Scholars and students of literature have eagerly read and taught it, some of whom have explained it, commented on it, and pointed out its errors. The book is considered one of the last books written by Al-Mubarrad, and one of his most important books in general, as it contains a large selection of poetry, prose, and news, and contains many linguistic interpretations and grammatical opinions. In his introduction, the scholar Ibn Khaldun mentioned the concept of literary scholarship and its principles, then said: (We heard from our sheikhs in teaching sessions that the foundations of this art and its pillars are four collections: Adab Al-Kitab by Ibn Qutaybah, Al-Kamil by Al-Mubarrad, Al-Bayan wa Al-Tabyin by Al-Jahiz, and Al-Nawadir by Abu Ali Al-Qali Al-Baghdadi. Everything else is subordinate to them and branches off from them). Al-Qadi Al-Fadil said: (I read it seventy times, and each time I gained more benefits from it).
Abu al-Faraj al-Mu’afa ibn Zakariya also spoke about the importance of the book in his book (The Sufficient Companion and the Sincere and Healing Friend), saying: “Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Nahwi wrote his book which he called “al-Kamil” and included in it news and stories, many of which have no chain of transmission, and he deposited in it the derivation of the language and its explanation and clarification of its secrets and jurisprudence, which is what the likes of it can come with, due to the breadth of his knowledge and the strength of his understanding and the subtlety of his thought and the purity of his intellect, and from the clear grammar and syntax and its obscure, what is rarely found in it is someone who can fill its place.”
