Promised Land

Author's name: Theodor Herzl

The Promised Land, or Altneuland in German, is the last novel written by the founder of the Zionist movement, Theodor Herzl. It revolves around the Austrian Jewish jurist Friedrich Loewenberg, who, following a failed love affair on an island with his Prussian friend Kingscourt, isolates himself. After two decades of isolation from the world, he discovers that European Jews have established in Palestine what the novel calls a new society inspired by Western civilization. Although the novel is one of the founding works of the Zionist project, it is strangely considered one of the forgotten novels in contemporary literature. In the depths of this dangerous novel, the reader will discover the antiquity of the plans drawn up by the fathers of Zionism for the barren, civilization-free, and inhabited land of Palestine before, as the novel claims, the Jews would return to it. Furthermore, The Promised Land, with its utopian dimension, contains answers to many of the questions that haunt the reader about so-called Greater Israel and the future of an entire people who have been displaced from their land from the Nakba to the present day.
