I believe that biographies present popular history, as opposed to official history, which is devoted to writing about major events and their leaders. However, the impact of these historical events on people's lives can rarely be understood except through biographies. This collection is dedicated to biographies from the Gulf states, and unintentionally, most of them come from Saudi Arabia and Iraq. However, I deliberately chose to have most of them come from contemporary writers, hoping this would reflect the massive social changes that have occurred in the region. Therefore, I am not biased toward a past that is said to be more beautiful, but rather I hope these changes will interact with the future we long for. Many of these articles were published in the Saudi magazine "Al-Yamama," which I dealt with with great ease. Perhaps the book will become the first part of a series that explores the lives of the people of the Gulf and the Arabian Peninsula.
