A powerful and realistic novel that may shock you when you remember the nature of society during the period it was released, as it challenges the prevailing norms at the time. It addresses the oppression suffered by women, the concept of sin and religion, in addition to betrayal and the family disintegration that results from it. All of this is depicted through a realistic portrayal of a woman's struggle to gain her independence and freedom from those shackles. By presenting this novel in the early 19th century, Anne Brontë earned a special place in English literature despite her limited works, as she fiercely defends women's rights against psychological abuse from their husbands and society. Despite the harsh criticism she and the novel received, it became a bestseller and even a rival to her older sister Charlotte Brontë's novel, Jane Eyre. However, after Anne's death in 1849, and a year after the novel's release, Charlotte herself prevented publishers from reprinting it, with the excuse that "the novel was a complete mistake" because "nothing less consonant with the writer's nature could be conceived"; in other words, she was saying that Anne was a respectable young woman from a respected family, and it was unfair for strangers to judge her for writing a novel full of disturbing scenes of abuse and drunkenness. Nevertheless, despite the attacks on her and the work, the novel continued to spread and became entrenched as one of the classics of English literature, and the BBC classified it as one of the hundred novels that shaped our current world.
