Shusaku Endo (1923-1996) was a prominent Japanese novelist whose works explored questions about the relationship between East and West and modern Japanese life within a Catholic Christian framework. He was elected a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1981 and president of the Japan P.E.N. Club in 1988. He published many important works, some of which have been translated into Arabic, such as "The Sea and Poison" and "Silence" (translated by Kamel Youssef Hussein), and "Scandal" (translated by Fallah Rahim).
