The novel is more like an autobiography of the author about an Eastern Arab princess, the daughter of a great sultan, who, more than a hundred years ago, defied the traditions of her people. She married a German man and forsook her homeland and her father's kingdom, leaving behind a life of glory and palaces to be tossed by fate in the lands of exile between London and Berlin. She exchanged the life of mingling and unveiled freedom in Europe for the life of harems and veils in the East, and her Arab name, "Sayyida Salme bint Said," was replaced by a foreign name, Princess "Emily Ruete." Then, after twenty years, life became difficult for her, or she grew weary of European life, longing to return to her original homeland. However, the doors to return were closed to her, so she devoted herself to writing her life story and experiences in German, recalling memories of her country and her people.
