With Al-Ma'arri in His Prison

Many books and studies have been written addressing various aspects of the life and philosophy of "Abul 'Ala al-Ma'arri." Scholars who have delved into his work have held conflicting opinions; he was sometimes judged as an atheist and at other times as an infidel, while others elevated him to the ranks of great creators and esteemed philosophers, considering his thought an icon of liberal and revolutionary thinking. However, Taha Hussein's book is not so much a deep dive into Al-Ma'arri's personal biography or an analysis of his philosophical ideas, as it is a critical and emotional engagement from a person whose intellectual characteristics and life circumstances mirrored those of a person from another era.
