This novel is based on true events. The author was born and lived in Kuwait in the late 1950s and 1960s. Most of the events take place in Kuwait just before its independence and Abdul Karim Qasim's threat to invade and annex it. Most of the events take place in Ahmadi, Kuwait, where a British and American community lives, centered around the giant Kuwait Oil Company. The novel details the lives of Westerners there, how they lived a life of luxury and lucrative, tax-free jobs, and their relationship with Kuwaiti society and the Arabs who opposed them. The novel revolves around the search for a Soviet spy embedded among the British community. He was one of them and recruited by the Soviet intelligence. His code name was Agent X, and he was a British correspondent for the famous Times newspaper.
Philip Muster, who plays British double agent Kim Philby, who defected to Moscow in 1963 and died there in 1988, also visited Kuwait during that period as part of a Gulf tour. The novel is based on real events and their implications, much like the James Bond series writer Evan Matthias, who visited Kuwait during that period. The novel explores his visit and his acquaintance with the protagonist.
