It presents a selection of Italian folk tales, translated from the Italian by Dr. Najla Wali in a distinctive translation. Although these tales belong to oral literature, which constitutes a melting pot of local popular traditions, myths, and religious rituals of the Italian people, they are full of the human spirit. Readers can discern in them various echoes of Greek tragedy, One Thousand and One Nights, Boccaccio's Decameron, and Shakespeare's plays.
The tales were selected from what was collected by three pioneers of Italian folk literature: Domenico Comparetti, the linguist and folklore researcher; Giuseppe Petrie, the physician who was passionate about folklore and wrote the most important books of Italian folk tales; and Luigi Capuana, the writer who, inspired by Sicilian folk tales, wrote books of tales and stories for children.
