This was no metaphor, Esson, no exaggeration. I have seen the world burn. Do not speak to me of innocent witnesses, of those who did not deserve to suffer, of the cruelty of revenge. When a commune is built upon a fault line of active tectonic activity, do you blame its walls when they inevitably collapse upon its inhabitants? No, you blame those foolish enough to think they could defy the laws of nature forever. Some worlds are built upon fault lines of active pain, their foundations nightmares. Do not grieve the collapse of such a world. The wrath they aroused was their own undoing from the start.

I will now tell you how this world, the world of Ciel Anagest, ended. I will tell you how I ended it, or at least how I destroyed enough of it so that it would have to start over and rebuild itself from scratch.

I will tell you how I opened the gate and knocked down the moon while smiling.

Eason is torn between her desire to find her daughter, help her people, and save the planet. Nasson is torn between guilt for what she has done, anger towards the world that forced her into it, and love for her guardian, her new father.
