A unique fantasy novel, published in 2020 by the young American writer Victoria Elizabeth Schwab (b. 1987). It follows the life of a young French woman across three centuries and several major cities after she makes a Faustian bargain in 1714 that grants her immortality, but an immortality that carries with it a curse: that everyone she meets will forget her. The novel has received widespread acclaim and was nominated for the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel in 2020. The novel alternates between a narrative set in 21st-century New York City and flashbacks, ranging from Addie's childhood in France to her experiences traveling the world and witnessing major historical events. The novel begins in the early 18th century, and Addie is a young woman forced into a forced marriage who prays to the gods for freedom. She accidentally catches the eye of the Night God, who promises her the time she desires with the caveat that no one will ever remember her after the encounter. Over time, she subtly influences several people, leaving her mark on history and art. The Night God visited her every now and then after they made their pact, asking her to surrender her soul, but she adamantly refused each time. Everything changed, however, when Addie, nearly 300 years later, stumbled upon a young man in a library who remembered her name.
