Camilo José Cela's novel, "The Hive," is considered one of the hundred most important novels in 20th-century Spain. In fact, it is regarded as one of the foundational novels of contemporary Spanish literature. Despite its initial publication in Argentina in 1945, the novel remained largely unknown to Arab readers for a long time. It is now being released in a beautiful and striking translation by Mark Gamal as part of a collection of translated novels by Takween Publications in 2021.

Camilo José Cela received the Nobel Prize the year after Naguib Mahfouz won the award.

"The Hive" by the great Spanish author Camilo José Cela is the Odyssey of post-Spanish Civil War and the rise of Franco. However, we are not faced with a single Odysseus, but hundreds of examples of these surviving/living/returning Odysseuses from the contemporary Spanish Iliad.

Cela involves approximately three hundred fictional characters and fifty real ones in his novel, which takes place over three days in November 1943, as I estimate (he does not specify the time of the novel, but he alludes to the proximity of the Tehran Conference, which brought together Churchill, Stalin, and Roosevelt during World War II). These numerous characters play the roles of secondary protagonists.

There are no good guys or bad guys, rather we are faced with miserable characters, resigned to their fates, absurdly monotonous, and ordinary in their misery.
