In 1634, Samuel Pepys, the world's greatest detective, is to be transported to Amsterdam to be executed for a crime no one knows whether he committed. Along with him is his loyal bodyguard, Arent Hayes, who is determined to prove his friend's innocence.

As soon as the ship carrying Samuel sets sail, a series of strange events begin, so mysterious that they can be blamed on the devil! Inevitably, no one could have done all this except the devil himself. A person dies twice, a strange symbol appears on the sail, all the livestock suddenly die, and passengers are branded with death marks.

With his friend imprisoned, Arent has no choice but to take on the task of solving the mystery whose threads become intertwined with time. It is a mystery in which the passengers' past and present intertwine, and threatens to sink the ship and kill all its passengers.
