First published in 1891, the novel begins with the death of its main character, a mad philosopher known for propagating pessimistic theories about "Humanity". Borba leaves his fortune – including his eponymous dog, Quincas Borba – to Rubião, his devoted companion and teacher. Having been granted a fortune beyond his wildest dreams, Rubião quickly indulged in a life of luxury, on the condition that he continue to care for the dog Quincas Borba with the same devotion he had shown to humans. Lost in the bustling and problematic world of Rio de Janeiro in the late 1860s, it wasn't long before Rubião became a target for the city's sycophants, who could spot his naiveté from afar.
