A realistic novel written by Tolstoy, inspired by his personal experiences in the Caucasus. It revolves around the aristocratic young man, Dmitry Olenin, who leaves the luxurious life of Moscow in search of a deeper meaning to life. He joins the army and settles in a Cossack village on the outskirts of the Caucasus. There, he is drawn to the simplicity of Cossack life and their closeness to nature, and falls in love with the girl Maryana, a symbol of purity and spontaneity. However, his attempt to integrate into this world clashes with the reality that he is a stranger who does not fully belong. He discovers that his quest for spiritual clarity cannot be achieved merely by escaping society or imitating the lives of others. The novel is a philosophical reflection on the meaning of life, the search for self, and the contradiction between civilization and nature, illustrating the human struggle between selfishness and the desire to live honestly and simply.
