World chess champion Alexander Alekhine, a Russian with French citizenship, lived his life like his matches, moving from victory to victory and from continent to continent. But in 1939, precisely while Alekhine was in Buenos Aires, war broke out, changing the course of his life. Alekhine returned to Paris and witnessed the collapse of his adopted homeland, France, under German occupation. Alekhine became a hostage and property of Europe's new masters, the Nazi Germans, who seized the opportunity to exploit his fame as world chess champion. Alekhine collaborated with Hans Frank and Joseph Goebbels (ministers of the Nazi regime) and participated in tournaments held in the Reich. Thus, he transformed from a chess player into a manipulated chess piece. Little by little, he began to lose his key pieces: his wife Grace, his friends, and his best rivals. After the war ends, Alekhine takes refuge in Portugal, living alone as if he were playing alone against everyone. There, the invincible champion plays the last match of his life.
