A novel that explores a complex psychological relationship between two men bound by a past love and the weight of guilt. The events begin when Velchaninov, a Russian aristocrat, receives a surprise visit from Pavel Pavlovich Trusotsky, a widower whose deceased wife had an affair with Velchaninov before her death.
(The Eternal Husband is a title that symbolizes the role the husband assigned to himself and his view of not continuing to confront his wife's lover).
It turns out that Trusotsky's young daughter, Liza, is actually Velchaninov's child, but this secret weighs heavily on Velchaninov's heart, generating deep feelings of guilt and responsibility. He tries to protect the child from her alcoholic father, whose paternity is suspect. The novel shows how love, betrayal, and confession transform into a complex web of conflicting emotions between the two characters, oscillating between hatred, sympathy, provocation, and domination, in a psychological cat-and-mouse power game.
(The novel blends tragedy and black comedy in its analysis of these characters).
The novel concludes with an emotional conflict between the two men, in which Trusotsky expresses a desire for revenge as well as an incomprehensible psychological connection, making the work a profound study of jealousy, guilt, and human fragility, and more than just a mere tale of official betrayal.
