The novel revolves around Egypt towards the end of the nineteenth century, addressing the Egyptian situation in all its details: social, economic, popular, and national forces at the time. Through the Khedive's palace, the novel conveys the surrounding regional situations and the concurrent international situation, from Tsarist Russia to the Ottoman Empire, from France's lurking and England's hesitation, to the new state of Germany and America, the emerging and ambitious state. All of this is through (Mazhar Shukair), the novel's hero and writer, a lecturer at Abdeen Palace, where he narrates everything he experiences while simultaneously simultaneous with his mysterious past that haunts him, without his effort or desire.
