In India, ghosts and their tales are regarded with both respect and fear. I heard all sorts of ghost stories from my wet nurse and my father's chauffeur, Abdullah, my childhood constant companion and dear friend who is no longer here, as well as from my judge friends, officials, government employees, and, in two cases before the Indian Supreme Court, from whom I have been brought before the Supreme Court. Certainly, it is not a tale from a wet nurse or a chauffeur that should be recounted in this book. Only a few of these stories are in this book, and those that are true to the best of the author's knowledge and conviction. Some of these accounts undoubtedly have a lot of cock-and-bull flair, but the reader should remember that "there are more things in heaven and earth, etc." and that sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
