Lying on a cot in the shade of a tent pitched on a clearing in the forest, Harry recalls the most memorable events of his life. His health deteriorating due to gangrene in his leg, Harry begins hallucinating, imagining himself flying over the eternal snows of Kilimanjaro and dying after suffering many death throes. Hemingway said of this story, "I put all the real stuff into it," and he boasted that it contained enough ideas to fill four novels.
