PublisherDiwan Publishing
One of Mahfouz's most famous short story collections, and the most diverse among political and social criticism and profound philosophical questioning. Mahfouz was influenced in writing it by the deterioration witnessed by Egyptian society as a result of economic openness, which elevated a class of new rich and lowered the middle class to the abyss of family disintegration and the absence of role models, which resulted in ignorance, unemployment, and behavioral deviation. Mahfouz skillfully used symbolism to reveal the negativities of that stage, by talking about the ideal hero, illicit wealth, and the inevitability of downfall in the end. Many of the stories also witnessed the philosophical reflections for which Mahfouz was famous, in addition to stories and plays loaded with important connotations.
