They met without an appointment in a hospital next to a burned patient, stories turning over in their heads as their bewildered eyes spun. They had to talk silently and hold their unannounced trial, for all the scattered things the hospital and that aching bed had gathered, this present and that past meeting in anxious eyes that concealed much behind them. The stories burned and exhaled their stifled smoke, and whenever their skin ripened, they transformed into others, suffering anew. They were hearts that tasted their illness, surrendering to it, awaiting healing, like the groans that stirred the bodies of the burnt nearby. Between the past and the present, perhaps some images of our endings will summarize the path we have traveled.
