"A peasant from Khersis"—this infamous phrase was often uttered by the Pasha, the owner of the estate, as he held his whip and lashed the backs of the peasants, bent by oppression! This image, politicized by drama, has been etched into our minds, creating a flawed and unfounded association between the Beys and Pashas on one hand, and feudalism and economic and political exploitation on the other. It is true that the titles of Beys and Pashas were like commodities bought and sold, but there were men who earned them through merit, without seeking or desiring them. Men who gave this country what remains like a lush, shady tree, its roots firmly planted and its branches reaching for the sky.
This book delves into a history neglected by history itself: the biographies of men whose achievements transcended mere titles. Within their stories lies a rich tapestry of Egyptian history—geographical, political, economic, and social—a concentrated dose of the history of stone and people, of time and place, and a correction of misconceptions perpetuated by the July 23rd Movement, a movement marred by political, humanitarian, economic, and legal flaws. The greatest flaw, in my view, was its attempt to falsify collective consciousness through those I like to call "the tailors of history."
